Drapers’ Academy pupils have been bringing science to life with a bang at local Primary Schools presenting special assemblies for year 5 and 6 children. By acting out scenes from the past, when scientists have made discoveries, as well as some quite explosive demonstrations, pupils and staff have been sharing some of the diverse skills taught at the Academy, in particular the specialisms of science and maths.

The Primary children thorougly enjoyed this introduction to science, and were completely engrossed by the performances, as Academy pupils acted out the stories of Archimedes and the King’s crown, Alexander Fleming’s breakthrough of penicillin, Henri Becequerel’s discovery of radioactivity, and Robert Dyke’s detection of radiation after the big bang. The performances were brought to a close by Mr Wilson, demonstrating how water can be split into it’s elements and recombined to make rocket fuel, by sending plastic bottles flying across the hall.

The local primary schools can look forward now to further taster lessons which promise to be every bit as exciting as these assemblies. Whilst the Academy also looks forward to state of the art science facilties in its new £24m school buildings in September 2012.

Pupils who took part in today's assembly were: William Williams, Nickey Selling, Ruth Mensah, Craig Bowerman, Jack Ostermeyer and Katie Jones.
