Year 7 Study of Roman Shields

13th December 2011

Year 7's have been learning about the history of the Roman empire this term, looking at the skills and power of the Roman army, examining how the army trained, their equipment, as well as learning some legionnaire commands in Latin!

As part of this pupils have designed and created their own shields. There were some fabulous designs and so much effort went into making the shields that it was decided that it would be a competition with some winners chosen to receive a Horrible History book, and some chocolate goodies too. The winning shields had predominantly based their designs from the mid 1st to late 2nd century A.D. They are shown in the photo above with winning pupils. The blue shield features a design from a legion that participated in the Roman conquest of Britain in A.D. 43 but were disgraced by Boudica's uprising.

The winning entries were made by:

First place: Sian Moynahan.
Second place: Kira Gates.
Third place: Chloe Fisher.
Fouth place: Karl Robbins.
