Celebrating the Chinese New Year
23rd January 2012

The Chinese New Year began on Monday this week. Drapers’ Academy celebrated the start of the Year of the Dragon by giving out fortune cookies to pupils. These were kindly donated by the Great Wall Chinese in Gidea Park. In Chinese tradition the New Year is celebrated by forgiving past conflicts, as well as giving children gifts of money in red envelopes.
As one of the 12 symbols of the Chinese calendar the dragon is seen as special since it is the only one that is a creature of myth and legend rather than a real animal. It is regarded as a divine beast, the opposite of the malicious monsters featured in Western myths such as St George and the Dragon. The Chinese view it as a symbol of good fortune and a sign of intense power. Pupils in Year 7 who were born in the year 2000 would have been born in the previous Year of the Dragon.
In general, we can all look forward to success and happiness in the year ahead!
