London Chamber Orchestra Music Project
30th Januray 2012
Pupils at Drapers' Academy have joined the London Chamber Orchestra (LCO) in a music junction project, along with the charity Barnados and Havering Music School, with the aim of performing a piece of music written for the Olympics at venues across London this summer. Yesterday was the second opportunity for these young musicians to meet and take part in the 'music junction' workshop.
This ambitious project sees children, some without any previous musical experience, joining the LCO musicians at workshops to rehearse a piece of music. This will be performed at the inaugural journey of the Olympic Javelin Train that will be taking passengers from Kings Cross to Stratford during the Olympics. The music is called Track to Track and has been composed by Graham Fitkin for this occassion, drawing inspiration from works like Benjamin Britten and WH Auden's ‘Nightmail’.
The project compliments Drapers' Academy's own goal for improving its pupils access to music by providing access to musical instruments, tuition and opportunities to practice. It is hoped that using music will inspire and improve the confidence for all those involved.
Russ Hayward, Teacher of Music at Drapers' Academy commented, "It is a unique and very exciting project to be involved with, and the pupils have found it very inspiring to work with the LCO and their musicians and can't wait to celebrate the momentous occasion of the Olympics in London."
