Our First Prize Giving Awards

29th December 2011

The achievements of 70 Drapers’ Academy pupils were celebrated last night at the first annual prize giving evening. The evening was attended by guest speaker and Chair of Governors, Adrian Lyons CBE and of The Drapers’ Company and awards were presented by Adrain and Prof. Morag Shiach, Vice Chair of Governors and Queen Mary, University of London.

Following a cheese and wine reception in the dining hall, the Principal, Mr Slater, welcomed parents, carers, pupils, staff and guests to the prize giving evening with a speech where he reflected on the achievements of the first year at the Academy and the need to celebrate this. He looked forward to how the pupils will benefit from the astonishing £24m buildings in 2012 but also spoke about how it is the people within it that make the school. He particularly thanked the staff for their relentless hard work, but that tonight was about the success of our pupils.

Subject awards for the 2010/2011 academic year were given to year groups by Assistant Vice Principals Mr Fanning and Miss Blaize, recognising the highest grades achieved in each subject. Before announcing the awards, both took time to acknowledge the personal efforts and development of various pupils. Mr Fanning spoke about Key Stage 3 pupils in years 7 and 8 who had performed science plays to local primary schools and at the Harold Hill Festival, and of the girls who had raised both awareness and funds for the British Heart Foundation and the musicians who had supported the Broadford Primary School royal wedding party.

Miss Blaize recognised the efforts of all the pupils in year 9 stepping up to the challenge of the GCSE’s in Key Stage 4, as well as the pupils who attended Queen Mary Univeristy for special science studies who confirmed what we know of our pupils in both intelligence and maturity with bright futures ahead of them. Miss Blaize also thanked the school band for their commitment to various performances throughout the year, including the visit of HRH The Duchess of Gloucester, and congratulated the pupils who represented the Academy so well at the Havering Science Competition.

Vice Principal Mr McGuinness then announced the Year 11 leavers awards. He spoke briefly on what a pleasure it was to welcome back the former pupils to the Academy commenting, what an excellent year group they had been who had exceeded all government targets, a reflection of both individual effort as well as reflecting the good support they received from friends, family and school.

In addition to high academic achievement being recognised with the subject awards the Academy introduced Commitment and Attaintment awards for each year group. Vice Principal Mrs Monk spoke about how the Commitment Award recognised consistent effort by pupils in class, homework, attendance, punctuality and participation in extra curricular activities. Whilst the Attainment Awards recognised where a pupil had excellent in one or more subject. She particularly mentionned Pauline Siasat, thanking her for playing the piano as we arrived, and Hannah Wybrow who had achieved an A star grade in art taken in year 9 and was now studying A level art.

A final award given was The Drapers’ Company Medal. This new award was introduced by Adrian Lyons, and is an annual educational award from The Drapers’ Company the Academy sponsor. He spoke of the great honour to be added to the list of recipients of the Drapers’ Medal, and his pleasure in awarding it to Amy Hayden for her marvellous academic achievements with 1 A*, 4 A’s and a further 8 GCSE’s C grade and higher.

Concluding the evening Adrian spoke of his pride as a Governor of Drapers’ Academy that another milestone has been reached, with this awards ceremony concluding the first year of Drapers’ Academy. As the first school created by The Drapers’ Company in over 100 years he commented on how touched everyone had been by the support given, and the shared vison, at the cementing of relationships with the community and how he was sure that Drapers’ Academy will be here and flourishing in years to come. He spoke of of his personal pride of this and how the new buildings will be both a centre for the community and a source of pride for Harold Hill. He finished by congratulating all the prize winners for their excellent achievements.

However, before the evening ended Mr Fanning had one more surprise for the award recipients. With everyone going into a draw with six pupils being selected randomly to go on a day trip to Paris with two teachers, Mr Hardy and Miss Ferrara. The winning pupils were Kye Fullbrook, Harry Bulger, Liam Pope, Jenny Green, Emily Shipton and Ella Adnams.
