Meeting The Monarchy

It really has been quite a week for myself and our Head boy Bobby and Head girl Eliza. On Tuesday afternoon we made our way to Buckingham Palace, on invitation from the Drapers’ Company. There, we were part of a small group who met HRH the King and the Queen for the unveiling of his amazing new portrait, commissioned by the Drapers’ Company. 

Walking through the main gates of the Palace in front of hundreds of tourists was a very strange experience and shaking hands and chatting with the King and Camilla was even more unbelievable! However, the way the King talked to Bobby and Eliza about their future plans and ambitions was the most priceless part of the day.

Our royal day really highlights Drapers' Academy's belief that there is no limit to the potential of our pupils and students and shows that we are truly passionate about offering an incredible range of opportunities to build confidence, connections and ambition.

Excerpt from our Student's School Newspaper:

With exam season creeping in, Drapers’ Academy is forced to say goodbye to the current year 13 students, including the head students, Bobby and Eliza. However, their departure was marked extravagantly as, on May 14th, our head students were given the opportunity to meet and spend time with the current King and Queen of England, HRH King Charles and HRH Queen Camilla.

On the day, Bobby and Eliza stood in front of the gates of Buckingham Palace, which they described as a ‘surreal’ experience. Our head students were given the responsibility of being part of the unveiling ceremony for King Charles’ new commissioned portrait.

During the unveiling ceremony, the head students said, “we got told to keep quiet to not ruin the surprise of the ceremony,” and they were filled with emotions due to this splendid opportunity.

After the unveiling of the portrait, Bobby and Eliza were given thirty minutes to talk to the Royal family, but also to tour Buckingham Palace, which is truly a unique opportunity. In the Palace, our students were introduced to the ‘beautiful’ art gallery, consisting of grandeur chandeliers, gold-framed paintings, and a striking, vermillion carpet. They were then taken to have tea and cake with King Charles, who left a positive impression on our head students They said, “he is kind and thoughtful; a man as well as a king” and “his life was about service and providing for his country”. With the year 13 students coming to the end of their school life, our current Head
Boy, Bobby said, “this was a perfect way to end my time as Head Boy at Drapers’ Academy.”
